Timescapes Conference: The Craft of Qualitative Longitudinal Research

Cardiff School of Social Sciences is holding a one day conference which provides an opportunity to consider research that takes a qualitative, longitudinal approach to researching families, relationships and identities-in the-making. The Conference theme will be around the craft of Qualitative Longitudinal Research. This event is being held in collaboration with the ESRC Timescapes Study, which is exploring the ways in which personal and family relationships unfold over time and through the life course, and how those relationships shape who we are.  The conference will be of particular interest to those who wish to hear about cutting edge research that is developing and showcasing the use of qualitative longitudinal methodologies and methods, and the principles and practices of temporal research.  See the conference website at:

Five-Day Intensive Training Course in Biographic-Narrative-Interpretive Method - BNIM - County Clare

Qualitative longitudinal research:data sharing and re-use

The National Longitudinal Study of Children in Ireland, GROWING UP IN IRELAND, have organised an interesting seminar with Professor Bren Neale, University of Leeds and Director of the Timescapes ESRC Qualitative Longitudinal (QL) study. "Professor Bren Neale is the Director of the Timescapes ESRC Qualitative Longitudinal (QL) study and holds an ESRC fellowship to develop QL research methods.
As Professor of Life Course and Family Research, Prof. Neale also directs the Young Lives and Times project, designed to 'walk alongside' a varied sample of young people over a decade as their lives unfold. Within the Timescapes Study, Prof. Neale is developing an innovative model for archiving and re-using QL research data, based on the principle of data sharing.
Prof. Neale specialises in research on childhood, family life, personal relationships, life course transitions and intergenerational dynamics.  Current areas of research are family dynamics across the life course, post divorce families and scaling up QL research. A key aim is to make a difference in the real world through collaborations with policy partners. "

3rd Qualitative Research Summer School

The School of Nursing, Dublin City University is hosting a Qualitative Research Summer School that is aimed at qualitative researchers in healthcare, social sciences and related fields. Running from Monday the 8th of June to Saturday the  13th, the Summer School consists of twelve workshops, each of which is conducted over one or two days.  More information on their website.

Education and State Formation in 20th century Ireland

On the 15th of May, Dr Jane Gray from the Department of Sociology and NIRSA at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth presented a paper at the University of Helsinki which drew on data from the Life History and Social Change project. Titled "Education and State formation in 20th century Ireland: 1922-1945" the paper was part of a seminar on "The Political Child: Children, Education and the State".
 
Data from the Life History and Social Change project is presently being prepared for archiving by the IQDA.

Summer school on Oral History

The University of Limerick is hosting a summer school from 8th-11th June 2009 on Best Practice in Higher Level Humanities Research Methodology: Oral History. The course will over have an intensive focus on methodology, interviewing techniques and digitisation and archiving of oral sources. More information on the ISSP webpage.
On Wednesday at 2.00 I will be giving a presentation on the work of the Irish Qualitative Data Archive.
