Putting ‘The Children Referendum’ in the context of family change

Our first research briefing from Family Rhythms addresses the Children Constitution.

In this briefing we consider why the amendment Article 42.5 is on the agenda in 2012, by looking at the transformation over the past century in the way that childhood is viewed in Irish society.

DASISH: Qualitative Data Workshop: 20th-21st November 2012

Title: DASISH: Qualitative Data Workshop
Date: 20th - 21st November 2012
Venue: NIRSA Conference Room, 2nd Floor, Iontas Building, NUI Maynooth

DASISH is an FP7 infrastructures project that brings together all 5 ESFRI Research Infrastructures in the Humanities and Social Sciences (CESSDACLARINDARIAH,ESS and SHARE) to explore common challenges and solutions.

The purpose of the workshop is to examine the contribution that qualitative social science researchers and archivists can make to the DASISH project, and to ensure their involvement and co-operation.

The workshop will contribute to DASISH by focusing on some of the distinctive challenges and opportunities associated with integrating the community of qualitative social science researchers and archivists within SSH infrastructures, in particular those associated with data preservation, access and legal and ethical issues.  It will also highlight the ways in which addressing those challenges and opportunities can contribute to the DASISH goal of promoting interdisciplinary crosswalks for the communities served by the ESFRI projects.

The workshop is organized by the Irish Qualitative Data Archive (IQDA) and co-hosted by our partner organization the Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI)

Social Sciences Research Ethics Slam, UCC

Title: Social Sciences Research Ethics Slam
Date: Thursday, 8th of November 2012, 10.00am – 12.00
Venue: University College Cork

A workshop for social science researchers, hosted by ISS21 and the Study of Religions department. Focusing on:
The Public Use of Private Data?

  • Re-use, archiving and/or destruction of data
  • Ethical dilemmas and contradictions in ‘best practice’ guidance
  • Should empirical data be destroyed on project completion?
  • Should empirical data be made available for re-use and re-analysis?

Researchers are invited to give very short (max 7 minutes) presentations on the challenges they have encountered in relation to these questions in their own empirical, field-work based research in different social science disciplines. The presentations will provide the platform for an interdisciplinary workshop discussion on these ethical issues and on contradictions in ‘best practice’ guidance and policy.

Further info: Please contact Lidia (l.guzy@ucc.ie) and Caitríona (c.nilaoire@ucc.ie) with offers of short presentations for this workshop. It is hoped that this might form the basis for a series of social sciences research ethics workshops on different themes.

Teaching Secondary Analysis of Qualitative Data: a workshop for qualitative methods teachers. Places are still available

Title: Teaching Secondary Analysis of Qualitative Data

Date: 18 September 2012
Venue: UK Data Archive, University of Essex, Colchester

On 18 September the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) is hosting a half-day workshop at the UK Data Archive aimed at best practices in teaching qualitative analysis of secondary data.

ESDS Qualidata has pioneered archiving, sharing and methods of reuse of qualitative research data, and is incorporating some of the great materials for secondary analysis advanced by the Timescapes team.
The workshop is aimed at those with and without experience in teaching in this area and provides an opportunity for participants to share current strategies and ideas on how to promote skills in reusing data. This event is free of charge, but numbers are limited and booking is essential.
